My 6-yr-old daughter was just diagnosed, and I’d love to find other families in the area!
Hi! And welcome to a great group, but booo, for joining! I’m in the Orlando area, but wanted to let you know about the Diabetes camp in Brandon; http://www.floridadiabetescamp.org/. It is really great for newly diagnosed kids AND parents! The camp is wonderful and gives you a break - what better people to have on-hand for her, 24/7 than Doctors, Nurses, and most importantly other D’s that are just like her. Unfortunately, these kids have to grow up sooner than than other kids when it comes to taking care of themselves and the diabetes and I think this really helps. It really depends on how you want to move forward with her care. I can tell you, almost 4 yrs in now - she was two weeks shy of her 5th birthday when diagnosed, the more you try to control the D and the T1D makes it harder. Yes, it sucks, but this is what we’ve got and this is how we’re going to go forward. Only you and your SuperD can head down the path. There’s a million ways to go with EVERYTHING and you need to do what is best for your family! Anyway, it’s a struggle, but remember you make it what it is and your daughter will take from you how to handle it. There’s also lots of groups on FB for caring for our D’s, but remember, only you can decide what works and doesn’t work for her. Missie
Thanks for the recommendation on camp coming up – we’ll be there! Anyone else going this weekend?
Hi,
We are not from St. Petersburg but we travel there every summer on vacation. My son was diagnosed 2 years ago at the age of 12. Those first few weeks were a nightmare but now it is a little easier to cope because of forums like this, knowing you aren’t the only one. My advice to you is let her become as Independent as you can with managing this crazy disease, it will only make it easier for all of you in the long run. Hang in there and take it instead of one day at a time. You can do this
