Music fades the pain

So I’ve been T1 for almost 5 years now. It’s been such an emotional roller coaster. For the past few weeks i have been struggling with my emotions. I lost my only friend I’ve ever had with T1 to dead-in-bed syndrome about 3 weeks ago. This has really taken me into some sort of depression and dark place. I can only compare it to the feelings I felt shortly after diagnosed.

Anyways, enough about that. I was driving today and heard Johnny Cash - Hurt. And became quite emotional. But it also felt good to just let go of the pain. This got me thinking about how powerful music can be. It can fade the pain or light up your world.

So I googled “type 1 diabetes songs” and was surprised at the lack of results. Really the only one I found was Jonas Brothers - A Little Bit Longer. Korn also has a song about the singers son with T1. But I realized that I don’t have a playlist to “fade the pain”.

Please help me with some songs that you listen to that help with our battle! T1 is full of emotions. So don’t limit the “type” of songs to uplifting or “happy songs”. I want to put together a playlist that can relate to the ups and downs the highs and lows of diabetes.

Thank you guys so much in advance.
P.S. I joined The Nation a few days after the loss of my friend. And this is the best outlet I could ever imagine. I wish I would have found this years ago and would have avoided the loneliness of trying to do this alone. Love you guys.

Bret Michaels - It’s all good

Whereas I find Nick Jonas’ song to be perfect when you’re sad, the Korn song for when you’re mad at your disease, Bret Michael’s song is quite uplifting and helps you stay strong.

I agree this site has been really great way to connect with people as we are all going through similar emotions when it comes to being T1s.

I have found some songs that I can relate to maybe in the moment or just because they are about finding strength. Its weird how sometimes when I am at my weakest a song will come on and convey my emotions exactly. Here are a few, I look forward to checking back on here to see what other songs get suggested!

“Superheroes” by the script
"You Gotta Be" by Des’ree
"Fix You" by Coldplay
"My Body" by Young the Giant
"Save You" by Simple Plan
"Sick Again," by Led Zeppelin
“The Heart of Life” by John Mayer
“Soul to Squeeze” by Red Hot Chili Peppers
“Lost” by Coldplay

“Never Surrender” - Corey Hart
"I’ll Fly Away" - Allison Krauss

I agree that adversity can be offset by good music - sometimes just knowing that someone “gets” that pain and struggle can make all the difference.

Ara Batur by Sigur Ros.

Hard Luck Stories by Neil Young–he’s T1 as well!

I wrote a harp solo called “Hurt Fingers” one night, when I realized that I needed to play music as a career in order to be happy but my fingertips would always have lancet pricks. If I ever record it, I’ll let you know!

Music is a magic that’s hard to explain. No matter what, keep listening.

I was just listening to Tim McGraw’s “Live like you were dying” today. It was one of my sister-in-law’s favorites. It always makes me smile when I hear it

@Gj562 - I’m so sorry to hear about you and your best friend. My son died from dead in bed syndrome June 24, 2001. It still hurts. I can now deal with it pretty well, but if I really think hard about him or the events of that day I cry and it hurts a lot.

I also know someone else who lost their daughter due to this. It sucks out loud.

I’m also a musician. And while I don’t write songs about D or at least haven’t yet, I did write and record one for my son.

I have it posted on soundcloud. https://soundcloud.com/boomboomdrums/nickshafer

Best of luck to you and I’ll check out some of the songs mentioned on here.
