I am on the generic for prozac (the lowest dose) I find that it helps me use / need less insulin. Does anyone else find this to be true and if so does it cause weight gain??? Thank you...
Hi Nicole,
I was on prozac (the generic as well) and recently weaned myself off because my husband and I want to have a baby soon and I wanted to see how I would do without it. The doctors say a low does of prozac does not pose a real risk to the baby and/or preganancy (FDA category C) but the less in your system the better. Now that I look back, I do think it made me more senstive to insulin. Also, it did not cause weight gain for me, in fact it helped me lose a few! Good luck! :)
Jackie,
Thank you for the info. If it is in catefory C (like Lantus) then I probably should get off of it too. We are trying as well! I was just reading stuff on google and it said that it could cause weight gain and I was like "oh crap" one more thing to pack on the pounds!
congrats on the baby trying! so exciting! how long have you been trying? We haven't started yet, still working on getting those "three perfect months" down.
If you don't mind me asking, what are you taking the prozac for? Since I have been off, I have learned new ways to handle my depression/anxiety that I would be happy to share. I started taking prozac because I can have obsessive anxiety which leads to depression. In other words, I would start to stress out about things that most people can cope with and then I would make lists in my head of everything that needed to get done, everything that bothered me etc. Thinking about these huge lists caused me to be even more stressed which lead me to get super anxietal and depressed! It was a fun process, lol! My poor husband suffered the brunt of many of my 'episodes' I found the prozac helped a lot. I started with 10mg and eventually went up to 40mg. No weight gain, it actually boosted my metabolism and suppressed my appetite a bit. The only negative I found was that it did make me a little numb. I am a very emotional person (good and bad emotions!) and it kinda dulled me. I was not as excited about things as I used to be and I also did not get as upset. for example, I am a cryer at movies and the prozac dried me up :( Now that it is out of my system, I went to see toy story three and cried like a baby, ha ha!
You're not the only one! :D That one pulled at the heartstrings.
From what I understand, SSRI's can lower your BG's / insulin needs. I have no idea why -- maybe your endo would know?
I was on Prozac for a few years (2003 to 2006, if I remember correctly) for mild OCD. I don't remember any glucose or weight changes, but I know the latter happens in some people when they start taking it (conversely, weight loss is also a common reaction, too).
We tried in June/July. I waiting for my August window now lol.
I started taking Prozac back in 2006 when I was gong through my divorce. I went off it in 2008 and when I noticed my blood sugar rising I talked to my Endo and she said she couldn't write a prescription for that and I needed to see my primary care physician for it. She did say she heard of it lowering the need for it. She wasn't a lot of help. Thanks for the responses. I wanted to see Toy Story 3 but now I am afraid I will cry LOL ha ha ha
