On Thurs evening I attended a reception in the home of Chris and Hollis Volk in Paradise Valley, AZ for two members of the professional staff of Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.
Dr. Hillary Keenan told us about the research she has done on the 50-Year Medalists, which includes me. Her most significant finding has been that 66% of the medalists they have studied are still making a little bit of their own insulin. Their bodies keep trying to replace the beta cells that keep being destroyed by the mixed-up immune system. This offers great possibilities if someone can find a way to make the immune system behave properly. Hillary's paper has been epublished by Diabetes journal, and will be published in print form in the next couple of weeks. There have been similar findings in the cadavers of deceased medalists who have donated their organs.
Dr. Lori Laffel, Chief of the Pediatric, Adolescent, and Young Adult section of the Joslin Clinic told us about the difficulties they have in getting their patients to find time to do the needed BG tests, and about how CGM is helping to solve this problem.
