What is your average speed? How often are you walking/running? What is your favorite pre-exercise snack?
I'm assuming you're talking treadmill here. My average speed is somewhere between 7 and 11 miles per hour. I can't give you an exact because I do interval running. I'm sure you know what it is, but I do it for rugby conditioning...start off with a 1/4 mile "jog" at about 6.5 mph and then turn it up to 9mph and do that for 2 minutes, "recover" at 4.5mph for 45 seconds, go up to 10mph for 2 minutes...etc. etc., you get the picture. I do that every time I'm at the gym unless I do legs in which case I just jog for 2 miles (6.5mph).
As far as a pre-exercise snack, I don't eat before a workout because the supplements I take work best when taken on an empty stomach. If I eat before I train, I feel like I'm going to throw up :)
I'm training to walk across the Sahara desert next year. I've been training for the last 15 months and have learned a lot in that time. I'd be more than happy to share my learning with anyone interested.
You might be interested to read this story of my last long training walk, which I did 3 weeks ago and will be doing again Saturday week - http://www.geocities.com/alex_of_oz/Wilsons_Prom_May09.html. This walk was 35 miles, but the interesting part of it was when I was stuck in the wilderness over night because I lost the track. I was on my own, no where near civilisation, the temperature was approaching 3 or 4 degress celcius and it started to rain. I stopped where I was and slept the night on a rock. Having my jabs in the morning huddled under my poncho was an interesting exercise.

Sorry to be coming to this discussion so late.
That is awesome that you're planning on doing the Marathon des Sables next year, Alex. It is on my list of things I'd like to do some day. I've done a few ultras, but nothing like that. I haven't gone beyond a 50 miler yet, but I suppose I will in the next couple of years. The challenge is out there.
I'll read some more of your site and try to keep an eye on it for updates.
Stay safe and good luck!
Thanks for your kind words.
You can read about my training experiences since April last year by going to the training blog at http://train2gain.biz/My_Sahara_Stroll_2010/home.html. I'm planning on doing a marathon for my training this coming Sunday.
I've done another long one since the one above, and you can read more about that in the blog, or see more information at http://www.train2gain.biz/My_Sahara_Stroll_2010/images/wilsons_prom_jun2009_reality.ppt
